Understanding Postpartum Depression: Signs and When to Seek Help
Most new mothers expect to feel tired. Fewer expect to feel flat, anxious or disconnected — and when it happens, many assume it's simply part of having a newborn.
The 'baby blues' affect a large number of mothers in the first days after birth: sudden tears, irritability and worry that pass within about two weeks. Postpartum depression is different. It lasts longer, feels heavier, and starts to get in the way of daily life.
Signs to watch for include low mood most of the day, losing interest in things, sleep problems that aren't explained by the baby, constant guilt, and feeling unable to cope.
If these feelings last beyond two weeks, or if you ever have thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, please reach out to a doctor, counsellor or helpline straight away. Getting help early makes recovery faster.
